9/29/2015 - Somerset County Senior Centers Announce October Programs

The Senior Centers operated by the Somerset County Office on Aging & Disability Services announce the October program schedule.  All programs begin at 11:00 a.m. unless otherwise listed.  Please call for lunch reservations by 10 a.m. the day before you wish to come. For more information, contact the appropriate centers.

Tai Chi – Monday1 p.m. The cost is $40 for an eight-week session (Oct. 5 – Nov. 30).  The registration deadline is Wednesday, Sept. 28Tai Chi is based on shifting body weight through a series of light, controlled movements that flow rhythmically together into one long graceful gesture.  Tai Chi practice can help reduce falls in the elderly or those with balance disorders.

Zumba – Wednesday & Friday9:30 a.m. The cost is $40 for an eight-week session (Sept. 9 – Oct. 30). Zumba is an aerobic fitness program featuring movements inspired by various styles of Latin American dance.  There are several benefits of Zumba such as strengthening of the cardiovascular system and bones, improving range of motion and good posture.

October 2 – Movie & Lunch: “Hocus Pocus,” 10:30 a.m. (Hocus Pocus is an American comedy starring Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy as a trio of witches in Salem, Massachusetts).

October 6 – “Speak Volumes without Saying a Word” by Helen Vasko, 10:30 a.m. (Helen leads this discussion group about how hand signals and other universal gestures are used no matter where in the world you live).

October 6 – Free Blood Pressure Screenings by the Visiting Nurse Association of Somerset Hills, 10:30 a.m. (A registered nurse from the Somerset Hills Visiting Nurse Association will be onsite to do individual blood pressure screenings).

October 7 – Mandala Art Workshop, 10:30 a.m. (Mandalas are created with intricate geometric patterns that are thought to represent the universe.  The basic Mandala is a square with four “gates” containing on a circle.  As an art form they are exquisitely beautiful when color is added).

October 9 – “Medicare and Medications Made Affordable” by Laurie Roome, Eldercare Educator, Somerset County Office on Aging & Disability Services, 10:30 a.m. (Are you finding it difficult to pay for your prescriptions, healthcare insurance, premiums and co-pays?  If so, this presentation is for you.  Learn the basics of Medicare and how you can get the most out of your Medicare dollars.  Discover the best options for you and cost saving programs you may be eligible for.  Register by Oct. 7).

October 14 – Autumn Floral Arranging Workshop, 10:30 a.m. (Members of the Bernardsville Garden Club will conduct an informative and interactive floral arranging workshop.  All participants take home a lovely live flower basket.  Seating is limited and reservations are required).

October 16 – Walking Club, 10:30 a.m. (Take a refreshing walk around the campus and receive a FREE pedometer (supply is limited to the first 15 people) and learn tips to maximize the benefits of daily walks).

October 16 – “Facebook 101” Lunch & Learn with Mike Dias, 12:00-1:30 p.m. Seating is limited -  reservations are required byOct. 14.  Program cost is $5.00 per person, (We are excited to offer this class on the basics of Facebook with an emphasis on privacy and cyber safety.  Learn how to create an account, post photos, message others and search for long lost friends. October 16, 23 & 30 – “Drawing 101 Workshop” by the Center for Contemporary Arts, 1:00-2:30 p.m. The cost for the three week session is $60, made payable to the Somerset County Senior Wellness Center.  Space is limited to 15 participants who must be able to attend all three sessions. (Anyone can draw!  Did you stop drawing years ago? Do you think you can’t draw but would like to?  This is the class for you.  Review or start anew with the basics of drawing.  Learn warm-up exercises that encourage you to explore the pencil line on paper.  Demonstrations and one on one instruction will be provided.   Discover your inner artist in a safe, non-competitive environment.)  A suggested lunch donation for those over age 60 is $2.00; the cost of lunch for those under age 60 is $6.99.Call for menu options.

October 20 – Total Brain Workout: Puzzles & Mind Games, 10:30 a.m. (Join Kristen for another exciting round of mind games and puzzles.  Please register by Oct. 16.).

October 21 – Rubber Stamping Halloween Card Workshop with Jerry, 10:30 a.m. (Jerry instructs us on how to create a unique Halloween greeting card for our friends and loved ones.  Please register by Oct. 19.).

October 23 – Autumn Leaf Candle Holder Workshop, 10:30 a.m. (Create your own autumn-themed candle holder using mason jars, leaves and creativity.  Please register by October 19th).

October 27 – Armchair Travel to Sicily with Valerie Moreno, Traveler, Artist & Lecturer, 10:30 a.m. (Valerie will share her personal experience about her travels to Sicily, finding her family there and will also talk about the history and culture of the island).

October 28 – October Birthday Celebrations, 12:15 p.m.

October 29 – “Computer Safety Class,” 9:00-10:00 a.m. (Computer safety is paramount in keeping your information and identity safe from hackers.  Learn the best tips to achieve maximum security and peace of mind.  Space is limited.  Please register by Oct. 28).

October 29 – Fall Floral Design Workshop, 9:30-10:30 a.m. Space is limited; register by Oct. 25. (Work with a florist who will teach you how to design your own floral basket to take home.  The cost is $10.00 per person, which includes flower supplies.

October 29 – “The Life & Work of M.C. Escher” – Lecture & Printmaking Workshop, Art of the Master’s Program by Creative Notions, 10:30 a.m. (Maurits Cornelis Escher was a Dutch graphic artist.  He is known for his mathematically inspired woodcuts, lithographs and mezzotints.  These feature impossible constructions, explorations of infinity, architecture and tessellations.  Join Creative Notions for an individual print making project inspired by his works.  The hands-on portion of this program accommodates 16 participants.  The lecture portion of this program has unlimited attendance.   Advanced registration is required).

October 29 – Swing Dancing Lessons, 1:00-2:00 p.m. Register by Oct. 25. (A dance instructor from New Jersey Arts Horizons will teach us each step of “Swing Dancing,” which is a group of dances developed with the swing style of jazz music in the 1920’s-1950’s. No dance experience necessary.) 

October 30 – “Potions” by Sciencetellers, 10:30 a.m. (Join us for this unique program that will surely get you in the mood for Halloween!  In a building named Doolittle, there is a hidden underground laboratory.  And as the story goes, Doolittle is guarded to protect its mysteries forever.  Join us as we learn about the concept of matter, its three states (solid, liquid and gas, and how to change matter from one state to another by telling the tale of Doolittle as we discover the secrets of this hidden laboratory, perform narrow escapes, witness surprise discoveries, and reveal an unbelievable ending.  Please register by October 27th).

Ageless Grace – Monday9:30 a.m. The cost is $40 for 8 sessions; dates are Sept. 28 – Nov. 23. Advanced registration is required. (There will be no class Oct. 12.) Ageless Grace is a fitness program that is based on the cutting-edge science of neuroplasticity (the ability of the brain and central nervous system to change structurally and functionally). It is designed to activate all five functions of the brain - strategic planning, memory and recall, analytical thinking, creativity and imagination, and kinesthetic learning.   The program is intended for people of all ages and abilities and can be performed while sitting or standing. Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing and sneakers.

October 5 - “Sweet Potato Tasting” by Samantha Nunzio, Registered Dietitian, Shoprite/Wakefern (Samantha will discuss the nutritional benefits of sweet potatoes and will offer a tasting of a sweet potato salad.  You will receive informative literature as part of this delicious program).

October 6, 13, 20 & 27 – Mahjong Mornings, 10:00 a.m. (Have you always wanted to learn how to play Mahjong or are you familiar with the game but just in need of fellow players?  Tuesday mornings are Mahjong Mornings.  Lessons and refreshers will be available).

October 6, 13, 20 & 27 – Mind Your Mind Exercises, 11:15 a.m. (Did you know that solving puzzles or challenging yourself with new mind-stretching exercises can stimulate the brain and enhance your creative and critical thinking processes?  Join Janet for some mind-tingling brain stumpers for a fun-filled, intellectual workout).

October 7 – State Health Insurance Program (SHIP) - A counselor will be available to provide free help to New Jersey Medicare beneficiaries who have problems with, or questions about their health insurance.  SHIP is a statewide program by the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services. October 8 – Fall Leaf Crafts (Crafting with nature will be our focus today as we use leaves in two different ways).

October 9 – Hillsborough Farm Harvest Festival Trip (The Fall Season is such a beautiful time of year with the leaves changing colors and the smell of hot apple cider in the air.  Pick a pumpkin to paint, jump on a hayride, do the haunted maze if you dare or simply enjoy the natural outdoors with a steaming cup of coffee and hot cider).

October 14, 21 & 22 – Minute to Win It Practice, 10:00 a.m. (Attend this practice session to prepare for the upcoming annual competition against the members of the Montgomery Senior Center.  Let’s go for the Silver Cup for a second consecutive year!  Visit the center to see what these challenges are all about).

October 16 – Dance Performance by the Raritan Valley Community College Dance Ensemble, 10:30 a.m. (Today we will visit the Montgomery Senior Center for a  performance by the Raritan Valley Community College Dance Ensemble).

October 19 – “Fruit of the Harvest: Apple Tasting” by Nancy Rosa-Mejias, Program Coordinator, Family and Community Health Sciences, Rutgers Cooperative Extension (Does an apple a day really keep the doctor away?  Learn nutrition facts and health benefits of the apple.  Enjoy a tasting of a variety of apples).

October 23 – Visit to the Montgomery Senior Center for the “6th Annual Minute to Win It Rematch” 10:30 a.m. (The Hillsborough and Montgomery Senior Centers will vie for the “Gold Cup.”  You will be on the edge of your seat while watching fellow members use powerful concentration and physical mastery to complete each challenge.    This program is sponsored by the Montgomery Rocky Hill and Hillsborough Rotary).

October 26 - “Hospice Hocus Pocus: Expectations, Benefits, Your Rights & Being Prepared” by Robert Goldbetter, Community Liaison, Ascend Health (Robert will discuss the expectations, benefits and your rights while on hospice).

October 28 – Hillsborough Halloween Party, 10:30 a.m. (Happy Halloween!  Join us for a Haunted Somerset County history and enjoy lively music, socializing and some interactive activities. Wear your favorite costume or hat for a chance to win a funny prize!)

October 30 – Movie & Lunch: “Beetlejuice,” 10:30 a.m. (Adam and Barbara are a normal couple…who happen to be dead.  They have given their precious time to decorate the house and make it their own, but unfortunately a family is moving in, and not quietly.  Adam and Barbara try to scare them out, but end up becoming the main attraction to the money-making family.  They call upon Beetlejuice to help, but Beetle juice has more in mind than just helping).

October 9 - Hillsborough Farm Harvest Festival Trip (The Fall Season is such a beautiful time of year with the leaves changing colors and the smell of hot apple cider in the air.  Pick a pumpkin to paint, jump on a hayride, do the haunted maze if you dare or simply enjoy the natural outdoors with a steaming cup of coffee and hot cider).

October 13 & 27 –Tai Chi with Bobbi Joels, 10:30 a.m. (Tai chi is based on shifting body weight through a series of light, controlled movements that flow rhythmically into one long, graceful gesture.  Studies have reported that some participants experience a reduction of pain, fatigue and stiffness and gain a greater sense of well-being.  Regular tai chi can help reduce falls, especially for those with balance problems.  This program can be done using a chair for support if desired).

October 14, 28 & 30 – Learn the Basic Portuguese Language with Fernanda Bernalise, 10:30 a.m. (This is part seven of Quail Brook’s Language Around the World series).

October 15 – Zumba Gold with Laurie Fetcher, Licensed Zumba Gold Instructor, 10:30 a.m. (Zumba is an aerobic fitness program featuring movements inspired by various styles of Latin American dance.  There are several benefits of Zumba such as strengthening of the cardiovascular system and bones, improving range of motion and good posture).

October 16 – A Captivating Community Theatre Performance by the McCarter Theatre, 10:30 a.m. (Recognized as a leading regional theatre for both professional theatre production and major presenter of performing arts, the community outreach ensemble will be our special guests for a magical theatre experience).

October 20 – Trip to Duke Farms, 10:30 a.m. (Quail Brook visits the oasis of nature in the heart of Hillsborough.  Learn how Duke Farms serves as a model of environmental stewardship and inspires people to become more educated on how to preserve our environment.  You’ll be in awe of the magnificent Orchid Exhibit!)

October 21 – “New Jersey Owls” by the Somerset County Park Commission Environmental Education Center, 10:30 a.m. (Learn about the nocturnal world of these fascinating birds of prey.  Whether long or short eared, barred or great horned, these raptors are truly special).

October 5, 12, 19 & 26 – Body & Brain Yoga with Lucy Pagnetti, 1:00-2:00 p.m. Advanced registration is required. A donation of $5.00 suggested per class.  (Body and Brain Yoga is a dynamic  mind-body practice that combines stretching, flowing movement, deep breathing exercises and meditation in a simple and easy to learn format that focuses on the development of the body’s core strength as the basis of physical, mental and spiritual health. Bring mats or you can use a chair.)

October 6 – ‘Drumming Circle and its Health Benefits” by Sharon Silverstein, Living at Peace (A Drumming Circle feeds the mind, body and spirit.  It’s a holistic experience that leaves a person feeling a sense of joy!  It is an ancient approach that uses rhythm to promote healing and self-expression.  Drumming has been known to induce deep relaxation, lower blood pressure and reduce stress.  Drumming has also been used as a form of communication and community building.  Sharon Silverstein is the founder and president of Living at Peace.  Sharon facilitates drumming circles for health and wellness as she has been featured on local television and radio programs, in local and county newspapers and in national magazines.  Participation in the inner drumming circle has an 18 person maximum.  Advanced registration is required for participation in the inner drumming circle.  Limited participation space is available outside the drumming circle.  Drums and other percussion instruments will be provided for 35 participants).
