Announce January Activities


The senior centers operated by the Somerset County Office on Aging & Disability Services announce the January program schedule. All programs begin at 11 a.m. unless otherwise listed.

All centers will be closed on the following days: New Year’s Day, Wednesday (Jan. 1), and Martin Luther King Day, Monday (Jan. 20).

Outreach Program at Senior Centers: Staff from the Office on Aging & Disability Services will be available at all of the county-operated senior centers each month to assess the needs of individuals, and if appropriate make referrals for services and assistance. Check the senior center schedule for dates and times.

All Somerset County-operated senior centers offer a nutritionally balanced lunch, Monday through Friday, for a suggested donation of $2.50 for anyone age 60 and above. Menu choices include a hot meat-based or meatless entrée or a cold meat-based or meatless boxed lunch. Please make reservations before 10 a.m. on the previous business day. Invite a friend or neighbor to join you for lunch! Come earlier in the day and enjoy one of the center’s many programs!

OOA&DS Satellite Office Opportunity – Laurie Roome, MS, community educator, Somerset County Office on Aging & Disability Services, 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Laurie will be at the center on the third Tuesday of each month. On Jan. 21, she will be available to answer any questions about the services that the Office on Aging & Disability Services provides. She will also be available to meet one-on-one as requested.
State Health Insurance Program (SHIP) – State Health Insurance Program (SHIP). A counselor will be available to provide FREE help to New Jersey Medicare beneficiaries who have problems, or questions about their health benefits. Computer Lab – Available Monday – Friday.
Billiards Room – Pool table is available daily on a drop-in basis, Monday – Friday.
Take Control with Exercise – Tuesday 10:30 a.m. & Thursdays, 9:30 & 10:30 a.m. This is an ongoing exercise program for all skill levels and can be practiced while either standing or sitting. Strengthen core muscles, and improve flexibility and balance while boosting stamina. **There’s no fee for this class. Dancercise – Monday, 10:30 a.m. Here’s an innovative and fun way to exercise! This low-impact aerobics class is great for the heart. Dance to popular music that will keep you moving. Start with a warm-up to help you avoid injury – then dance to the beat of the music and finish with a cool-down. **Sneakers are required. Yoga with Jillian – Tuesday, 2:30 p.m. In this gentle-flow yoga class, participants will practice poses while being seated in a chair or standing. Practicing poses will help release tension in the neck and shoulders. Learn how to stimulate areas of the spine for optimal health. The class will end with a guided relaxation so that participants will leave feeling rested and refreshed. **The cost is $40 for the eight-week program; the next session begins on Jan. 7. Tai Chi for Health (Beginner) – Wednesday, 12 p.m. Join this beginner’s class that teaches the basics of tai chi. Participants will improve their strength, balance and flexibility while learning new vocabulary, different ways of moving, and develop a better posture. This class will help participants master the more advanced forms of tai chi. **There is a suggested donation of $32 for the 16-week program; the next session begins on Jan. 8. Register by Dec. 28. Tai Chi for Health (Intermediate) – Wednesday, 1 p.m. Master the ability to shift weight from one side of the body to the other, move one leg to the other without stumbling or falling, and help keep the body in alignment. Participants will learn how to move slowly and in a circular motion without hesitation or confusion and improve the practice of specific movements, which will help strengthen bones and develop muscles. **There is a suggested donation of $32 for the 16-week program; the next session begins on Jan. 8. Zumba Gold – Wednesday or Friday, 9:30 a.m. Zumba Gold makes the Latin dance-inspired workout of Zumba accessible for people age 60 and above, and beginners or others needing modifications to their exercise routine. This fun dancercise builds cardiovascular health by using dance moves that challenge the heart and strengthen the hips, legs and arm muscles. **Sneakers are required. Knitting/Crocheting/Stitching Club – Monday, 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. Bring your own knitting/crocheting/stitching project to learn a new hobby or practice an old one while socializing. Participants are encouraged to donate their blankets and other items to the Menlo Park Veterans Memorial Home. All items will be collected at the Senior Wellness Center and donated monthly.
Bridge Club – Meets Tuesdays, 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m., and Wednesdays, 12:30 to 3 p.m. Bridge is a mentally challenging card game that when played regularly provides intellectual and social stimulation, and helps your memory stay active. Mahjong Club – Meets Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, 12:30 – 3 p.m. Mahjong is a great game to keep your brain sharp and supercharged! This club is for anyone who loves the game, wants to meet new people and have fun. This is not a competitive club. All levels of experience are welcome.
Monthly Book Club – Every Third Thursday, 12:30 p.m. On Jan. 16, join us for a discussion of, “The Other Wes Moore” by Wes Moore, then select the next book to read. New members are always welcome!

Jan. 3 – “Shingles: What You Need to Know” by Jeff Cressman, Wegman’s Pharmacy Program Coordinator, 10:30 a.m. Learn valuable information about the symptoms and treatment for shingles. Jan 6 – “Navigating Your Future” by Laurie Roome, M.S., community educator, Somerset County Office on Aging & Disability Services, 10:30 a.m. Don’t go it alone! There’s help out there. Learn how to navigate Medicare as well as the services and programs that are available. Find out how to determine when services are needed and what programs are available, when to seek professional help, who to call and how much it will cost, and the necessary documents that are needed to plan for the future including medical emergencies, program applications, long-term planning and end- of- life decision making. We will provide a packet to help organize your documents.
Jan. 7 – FREE Blood Pressure Screenings by the Somerset Hills Visiting Nurse Association, 10:30 a.m. A registered nurse will be onsite to give blood pressure screenings. No appointment is necessary.
Jan. 8 – Bingo, 10:30 a.m. Bingo is more than just an exciting activity. Researchers have found that playing bingo promotes socialization, strengthens hand-eye coordination and improves listening and short-term memory skills.
Jan. 8, 15 & 22 – Country Western Dancing with Vince & Diana, 10:30 a.m. Learn line and partner dances while dancing to popular and classic country music. Vince and Diana will adjust the teaching according to the participants’ skill levels. Everyone is welcome including beginners, experienced, partners, and singles.
Jan. 10 – Total Brain Workout with Kristen 10:30 a.m. Join Kristen for some brainteasers and trivia.
Jan. 13 – “Higher Living Through Habit: How to Recruit Your Brain to Affect Real Change” by Anna Nowik Valerio, 10:30 a.m. Have you ever tried to achieve a goal or make a change but get frustrated and give up? Many of us have. This motivational lecture will get to the root of why it is so difficult, and discuss strategies for reaching your goals and creating your best life.
Jan. 13 – FREE Broadway Kick Line Demonstration, 11:30 a.m. Join this fun, energetic class where you will practice a body warm-up, then learn and practice walking and small kicking movements to great music. With enough interest, we may start an on-going program. **Sneakers are required.**
Jan. 15 – Holiday Greeting Card Workshop with Jerry, 10:30 a.m. Make a unique greeting card for the holiday season using your creative touch. All levels of creativity are welcome! **All supplies are included. Reserve by Jan. 13.**
Jan. 17 – “New Year’s Resolutions: Do They Work? By Helen Vasko, 10:30 a.m. Join this discussion about the age-old New Year’s resolutions, which includes a round table about what your resolutions are and why?

Jan. 22 – Winter Floral Arranging Workshop, 10:30 a.m. Members of the Bernardsville Garden Club will conduct an informative and interactive floral arranging workshop. All participants will take home a lovely, live flower basket. **Reserve by Jan. 15.**
Jan. 24 – “New Jersey State Parks” by Kevin Woyce, author and photographer, 10:30 a.m. Enjoy a slide show that will include original photography of many of New Jersey’s beautiful state parks, plus vintage maps and images of historic people, places and events. Learn about the Lenni Lenape, historic battlefields that were the “the Crossroads of the American Revolution,” and the beginning of the transportation network – the Morris and the Delaware & Raritan Canals.
Jan. 27 – “FREE Blood Pressure & Blood Sugar Screenings: Knowing Your Numbers” with Saint Peter’s University Hospital, 10:30 a.m. Learn key risk factors and wellness tips to incorporate into your life for better health management and helpful prevention. No appointment is necessary.
Jan. 29 – “Aloha from Hawaii: Elvis Impersonator Show” by Mike Holland, Elvis impersonator, 10:30 a.m. Mike will warm up your winter with a tribute to Elvis Presley’s Aloha from Hawaii concert. Wear your dancing shoes and get ready to have a great time!
Jan. 31 – “LGBTQ Among Older Adults” by Bianca Chanel Mayes, health & wellness coordinator, Garden State Equality Organization, 10:30 a.m. Join Bianca for a discussion about being part of the LGBTQ community as an older adult.

Ping-Pong – Available Monday – Friday. Ping-pong (table tennis) has only been an Olympic sport since 1988. Go ahead and take a shot at this fun game. Play either singles or doubles games. It’s a great way to help improve concentration, agility and hand-eye coordination. **Call for availability.**
Table Shuffleboard/Air Hockey – Available Monday – Friday.
Qigong Practices with Michael – Monday, 10 a.m. Learn the traditional practice of Qigong, which is a sitting-meditation that helps participants become acquainted with the mind, body and spirit. Beginners will learn breathing techniques that are coordinated with physical movements while practicing sets of exercises (similar to tai chi) until each movement is perfected.
Gentle Aerobics – Monday & Thursday, 10:15 a.m. or 10:30 a.m. Exercise and move without putting undue pressure or strain on your body. Learn movements that will increase blood circulation, lubricate joints for flexibility, and strengthen and stabilize individual muscles. Gentle aerobics can help you decrease the risk of falls and make it easier to accomplish day-to-day activities. Exercises can be practiced while either standing or sitting. Chair Yoga –Tuesday, 10:15 a.m. Practicing chair yoga can help increase bone density, improve strength, flexibility and balance while participants are immersed in a relaxing class. Expect lots of gentle stretching to bring movement to joints and muscles. Hatha Yoga – Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. & 10:45 a.m., & Friday at 9:15 a.m. Learn how to improve your posture, control breathing, and practice meditation. Practicing Hatha yoga will help stretch and align the body, improve balance, flexibility, and circulation. **Please bring a personal mat; some mats are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Scrabble Club – Wednesday, 1 p.m. Exercise your vocabulary and crossword-solving skills while you enjoy a friendly game of Scrabble. If there is enough interest, members may compete with other Scrabble clubs in the area.
Pinochle Club – Tuesday & Friday, 12:30 – 3 p.m. Pinochle is a trick-taking card game, which can be played with two to four players. Come join us – whether you’re new to pinochle, or you’re just curious about how to play the game – everyone is invited to join the weekly games.
Healthy Bones Exercise Class – Wednesday, 10 a.m. This peer-led, 24-week exercise and education program is for individuals either who are at risk for osteoporosis or who already have it. Practicing these exercises can improve balance, strength, flexibility, and posture. **Advanced registration is required. A doctor’s note is also required before the first class and then once every year. Class is currently full. Monthly Book Club – Fourth Thursday of the Month, 10 a.m. Join us on Jan. 23, to discuss, “In the Midst of Winter” by Isabel Allende then we will select the next book to read. New members are always welcome!
Aerobic Chair Exercise with Sabina – Friday, 10:45 a.m. Aerobic chair exercises provide many health benefits such as improving heart health, reducing stress, lowering the risk of depression, reducing the risk of diabetes and osteoporosis, increasing body stamina, and improving metabolism, flexibility and stamina. Social Dancing – Friday, 11 a.m. This is a peer-led, social dancing class. Social dancing is not only great exercise but it is an opportunity to make friends in a positive and fun environment. No experience is necessary.

Jan. 2 – “Craft: Creating a Clothespin Snowman Ornament” with Caitlin Murray, 10:45 a.m. Make a snowman with just a few simple items from around the house, or make your ornament into a pin that can be worn. **All supplies will be provided. Please register by Dec. 27.**
Jan. 3 – “Maple Sugaring” by the Somerset County Park Commission, 10:45 a.m. Join a naturalist from the Somerset County Parks Commission to discover the sweet secrets hidden inside a maple tree. Learn the history of maple sugaring and the techniques that the Native Americans had perfected to make this tasty treat.
Jan. 6 – “Understanding Pneumonia and Prevention” by Jeff Cressman, Wegman’s Pharmacy program coordinator, 11 a.m. Learn the difference between two vaccines that are on the market and the Centers for Disease Control’s (CDC) guidelines for each vaccine to help you determine which one is the right choice for you. Pneumonia, an infection, attacks the air sacs in the lungs and can cause fever, chills, and difficulty breathing. Jeff will return on Feb. 12, to provide Pneumonia vaccines.

Jan. 7, 14, 21 & 28 – Conversational English with Sally Rob, Literacy Volunteers of Somerset County, 10:45 a.m. The mission of the Literacy Volunteers of Somerset County (LVSC) is to promote literacy throughout the community. LVSC provides student-centered tutoring and literacy programs for adults to help them function more effectively in their daily lives.
Jan. 8 – Elvis’s 85th Birthday Celebration, 10:45 a.m. Let’s celebrate the King’s 85th birthday with Mike Holland an Elvis impersonator! Sing and dance along to Elvis’s many hits, such as “Don’t Be Cruel” and “Hound Dog.”
Jan. 9 – Fact or Fiction, 11 a.m. Play this new game where you guess if statements are true or false? The answers may surprise you! Test your memory, your imagination, and maybe learn something new!
Jan. 10 – Blood Pressure Screenings, 10 a.m. Nursing students from the Somerset County Vo-Tech will provide free blood pressure screenings.
Jan. 13 – “Better Health Without Breaking the Bank” by Laurie Roome, M.S., community educator, Somerset County Office on Aging & Disability Services, 11 a.m. Did you know that you could live healthily and save money? Find out how you can maximize your healthcare dollars and tap into FREE Medicare benefits.
Jan. 14 – Bereavement Support Group, 10 a.m. Grieving the death of a loved one is a universal experience. Join this support group for a safe place to share common feelings about your grief and gain hope for the renewal process while learning interfaith bereavement principles and universal spiritual concepts. Ronald W. Kaplan, doctor of ministry, grief counselor, and pastoral psychotherapist will facilitate discussions. Everyone’s presence and participation are welcome.
Jan. 14 – January Birthday Trivia with Caitlin, 11 a.m. Find out who the renowned horror movie director and history-shaping heroes who were born in January and which birthstone should January babies wear.
Jan. 15 – Pointillist Snowflakes in Watercolor with Karen Haake, local artist, 10:45 a.m. Learn the Pointillist painting technique-using watercolors to paint beautifully textured snowflakes. George Seurat, used Pointillism in his art, which is a technique where the artist uses colored dots to create a jewel-like effect. **All supplies will be provided. Pre-registration is required.**
Jan. 16 – Challenge Your Cranium, 11 a.m. Don’t let your brain freeze during the cold weather! Improve your memory and attention while having fun. Caitlin will give your brain a workout with a variety of tricky and thought-provoking puzzles, riddles, and questions.
Jan. 17 – “Armchair Travelers Present North Vietnam” with Dorothy & Irwin Vogel, 10:45 a.m. Visit the jungles and monsoon forests of Vietnam, which has a diverse ecosystem alive with unique wildlife. “Meet” the people of Vietnam and get a glimpse of their dynamic culture and landscapes (i.e. Cuc Phuong National Park) without ever leaving your seat.

Jan. 21 – “New Jersey Originals” by Linda Barth, author, 10:45 a.m. What makes New Jersey so special? In addition to culture, wonderful suburban towns, a high standard for living, strong public schools, a mild climate, mountains and beaches, we must add one more, innovation. Join Linda as she takes us through some of the famous and not so famous hidden gems of the Garden State.
Jan. 22 – Guided Meditation with Caitlin Murray, 11 a.m. Become more self-aware and mindful of your surroundings with the help of calming music and through guided meditation. This class will help you reduce stress, control anxiety, increase your attention span and decrease age-related memory loss.
Jan. 23 – “Healthy Living for Your Brain and Body” by Nicolette Vasco, the Alzheimer’s Association, 10:45 a.m. Did you know that every sixty-five seconds someone in the United States develops Alzheimer ’s disease? Learn strategies for preserving the health of your brain and ways to age well physically and socially.
Jan. 28 – Who Did I Grow Up to Be? 11 a.m. Test your memory to see if you can match the youngsters to the well-known figures they became. Name celebrity faces before they were famous.
Jan. 29 – Craft: Chinese New Year Lanterns, 10:45 a.m. Celebrate the Chinese New Year (the Year of the Rat) by decorating glass lanterns using traditional colors and symbolism using red that symbolizes happiness, and gold symbolizes wealth. **All supplies will be provided. Pre-registration is required.**
Jan. 30 – Chinese New Year Celebration with the Senior Wellness Center at Bridgewater participants, 10:30 a.m. Celebrate the Year of the Rat with traditional Chinese music, dancing and singing, presented by our very own peers. In the Chinese culture, the rat is viewed as a clever, successful and content animal, which lives a quiet and peaceful life and is celebrated in hopes of having a peaceful and successful year ahead!

Chair Yoga with Manjula – Monday & Thursday, 10 a.m. Increase bone density, improve strength, flexibility and balance while you are immersed in a relaxing class. Individual Computer Instruction – Are you intimidated by computers? Do you know how to email and/or play solitaire on the computer? Do you know how to do a web search? Watercolor Paint Class – Monday & Thursday, 9 – 11:30 a.m. This is a great opportunity for an experienced artist to meet new people while water coloring. **Advanced registration is required. Please call 908-753-9440 for more information. Openings are available in the Monday group.**
Healthy Bones Exercise Class – Wednesday & Friday, 10 a.m. This is a peer-led, 24-week exercise and education program for individuals who are either at-risk for osteoporosis or have it. Exercises will help improve balance, strength, flexibility and posture. **Advanced registration is required. A doctor’s note is also required before the first class and then once every year. For new participants, the price is $45. This includes ankle weights, a participant’s manual and the class fee. If ankle weights are not needed the price is $15. Zumba Gold – Zumba Gold makes the popular Latin dance-inspired workout of Zumba accessible for people age 60 and above, and beginners or others needing modifications to their exercise routine. This fun exercise builds cardiovascular health when participants practice dance moves that challenge the heart and work the hips, legs and arm muscles. **Sneakers are required. Chair Yoga with Jillian – Tuesday, 12:45 p.m. Hatha yoga will help increase bone density, improve strength, flexibility and balance while being immersed in a relaxing class. Expect lots of gentle stretching to bring movement to joints and muscles. This class is perfect for relieving stress and helps participants gain an overall sense of well-being. The class is open to all skill levels, and the yoga poses can be practiced while either sitting or standing. **The cost is $40 for the eight-week program; the next session begins Jan. 7. Jan. 2, 9, 16, 23 & 30 – Bingo, 10:30 a.m. Bingo is more than just an exciting activity. Researchers have found that playing bingo promotes socialization, strengthens hand-eye coordination and improves listening and short-term memory skills.
Jan. 2, 9, 16, 23 & 30 – Line Dancing with Linda, 1 – 3 p.m. Line Dancing is so much fun it doesn’t even seem like exercise! This form of dance can help participants stay healthy both mentally and physically, and is suitable for people with limited mobility, can improve cardiovascular and muscular strength, and can increase coordination and balance.
Jan. 3,10, 24 & 31 – Fun with Brain Games and Trivia with Adrienne Graubard, 10:30 a.m. Did you know that solving puzzles or challenging yourself with new mind-activities could enhance your creative and critical thinking processes? Join Adrienne for a mind-tingling, brain-stumping workout.
Jan. 6 – “Moods, Foods, and Senses” by Kim Minerley, C.D.M., C.F.P.P., community liaison, Rehab at Rivers Edge, 10:30 a.m. Learn about how lifestyle and food choices can support your mood in this fun and interactive workshop. Explore healthy eating habits, discuss the food-mood connection and find out how to change your habits to gain a happier and healthier life.
Jan. 6 – “Creating Art Mosaics” – Lunch & Learn Opportunity with Lisa Brown, Art as Therapy,
1 p.m. Create beautiful mosaics using tiles made from foam board to give as gifts. **Advanced registration is required by Jan. 2. **
Jan. 7 & 14 – Boggle with Some “Folk Dancercise” with Rekha Srinivasan, Bharat Nritya Academy, 10:30 a.m. Before playing Boggle, which is a challenging game that is played using a grid of letters, we will do some Folk Dancercise.
Jan. 7, 14, 21 & 28 – Bridge Group with Ronnie, 1 – 3 p.m. Bridge is a mentally challenging card game that offers intellectual and social stimulation. Playing bridge regularly stimulates your brain, keeps it alert, and helps keep your memory active. New members and beginners are welcome (lessons are available).
Jan. 7, 14, 21 & 28 – Mahjong Club – Experienced player only, 1 – 4 p.m. Mahjong is a great game to keep your brain sharp and supercharged! This club is for anyone who loves the game, wants to meet new people and have some fun. This is not a competitive club. All levels of experience are welcome.
Jan. 8, 15, 22 & 29 – Tone and Flexibility Exercise Class with Sabina, 10:45 a.m. Enjoy an energizing class that is suitable for beginner and intermediate levels. Exercising with Sabina will boost your energy level, reduce stress, and help tone your body by practicing exercises using resistance bands, exercise balls and dance moves. Exercises can be practiced while either standing or sitting.
Jan. 8, 15, 22 & 29 – Ballroom Dancing with Art & Fe, 1 – 3 p.m. Dance to a variety of ballroom dance music. Meet new people and make friends while exercising! Dancing is a great way for people to get healthy and stay in shape. Besides being fun, dancing has many health benefits such as improving overall flexibility, strength, endurance and one’s emotional well-being.
Jan. 13 – “Alcohol Ink Art” with April Zay, Hummingbird Arts, LLC, 10:30 a.m. Create beautiful abstract works of art using sharpies and rubbing alcohol, which creates unexpected and interesting results. **Advanced reservations are required by Jan. 8.**
Jan. 17 – Cards and Dice Games with Gwen, 10:30 a.m. Join others to play cards and dice games that are guaranteed to make you think, laugh and make new friends.

Jan. 21 – Chinese New Year Celebration: The Zodiac Year of the Rat, 10:30 a.m. Enjoy dancers donned in authentic costume, and learn about China and its new year traditions from fellow center members.
Jan. 27 – “Moving Mind and Body,” with Lara Kats, certified dance educator and instructor,
10:45 a.m. Join this holistic class, which combines meditation and dance as you are guided through mind-body exercises. Class starts with deep breathing and body awareness then progresses to gentle exercise when your entire body will try creative movement to music. The class can be performed while either standing or sitting in a chair.
Jan. 28 – “Shakespeare’s Style of Writing Workshop” by Ellen Parker, educational director, Indecorous Theatre Productions, 10:30 a.m. Join us for this interactive workshop as we explore William Shakespeare’s writing, which is fun, dramatic, beautiful and open to countless interpretations and styles. **This program was made possible by funds from the Somerset County Cultural & Heritage Commission, a partner of the New Jersey State Council on the Arts.**
Jan. 31 – Quilting Bee for Experienced Quilters, 1 p.m. Join other experienced quilters once a month to socialize and discuss your individual quilting projects in a group setting. The group meets on the last Friday of each month. Each person is responsible for his or her own fabrics, patterns and notions.
