5/8/2024 - Somerset County-Operated Senior Wellness Centers Offer Exciting Activities in June




SOMERSET COUNTY, NJ – Connect with others at any of the six Somerset County-operated senior wellness centers, which are managed by the County Office on Aging and Disability Services. Join the fun, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The senior wellness centers offer games, activities, and educational health and wellness programs in a social and uplifting atmosphere.

The Senior Wellness Centers are closed on June 21 (Juneteenth) and June 25 (Staff Inservice Day).

Lunch
Attendees can invite a friend or neighbor to join them for lunch. All county-operated senior wellness centers provide a nutritionally balanced lunch on Mondays through Fridays for a suggested donation of $2.50 for anyone age 60 years and above. The menu includes a choice of hot meat-based or meatless entrées or cold meat-based or meatless boxed lunches. Senior wellness center clients must make reservations for lunch by 10 a.m. on the previous business day.

Virtual and Hybrid Program Guidelines
Hybrid and virtual programs are noted throughout the schedule. Participants can attend hybrid programs in-person with an instructor or via Zoom.

Participants can join Zoom programs through a web browser without downloading applications or
software. A camera (audio and video) is required to participate in Zoom programs.

Geri-Fit with Connie Ledder – Mondays & Wednesdays, 10 a.m. (April 29 – July 26). Rebuild strength that’s been lost through the aging process and achieve a higher level of functioning. This class combines strength training with stretching and range of motion exercises, stability, and balance training for fall prevention, cardiovascular activity for heart health, and gait exercises to help improve walking. This unique and beneficial 45-minute exercise program is facilitated two times per week, for 12 weeks (24 classes). **Pre-registration is required. Participants can practice Geri-Fit when seated or standing. This class requires a set of light dumbbell weights (2 lbs. to start), a sturdy chair, a stretch band, and water to drink during the workout. Stronger Seniors: Core Strength – Mondays, 1 p.m. and Fridays, 10 a.m. Get a safe and easy workout for core muscles by using resistance bands in this pre-recorded exercise program.

Mahjong Club – Mondays and Wednesdays, 12:30 – 4 p.m. Learn how to play Mahjong, an interesting game that helps keep the brain sharp and supercharged! This club is for anyone who loves games and wants to meet new people and have fun. **This is not a competitive club. All levels of experience are welcome.**

Canasta Club – Tuesdays, 12:30 – 4 p.m. Play this traditional card game that requires strategic and tactical thinking. **New members are welcome. For more information, call 908-204-3435.**

Bridge Club – Wednesdays, 9:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. Get intellectual and social stimulation when playing this mentally challenging card game. Studies show playing Bridge regularly can stimulate the brain to keep it alert and help one’s memory stay active. **New members and beginners are welcome.**

Chair Yoga with Jillian –Wednesdays, 1 p.m. (May 29 – July 17), & Fridays, 1 p.m. (May 31 – July 19). Gain health benefits by practicing yoga poses with the support and safety of a favorite chair. Increase bone density, and improve strength, flexibility, and balance while being immersed in a relaxing class. Expect a lot of gentle stretching to bring movement to joints and muscles. This class is perfect for relieving stress and helping participants achieve an overall sense of well-being. **The cost is $40 for the eight-week program. Pre-registration is required. Project Healthy Bones – Tuesdays 10:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. (Next session: May 14 – Oct. 22). Learn how to reduce pain, fatigue, and stiffness, gain a greater sense of well-being, and reduce the risk of falling by practicing Tai Chi. In this class, participants will learn how to shift their body weight through a series of light, controlled movements that flow rhythmically into one long gesture. **This program can be practiced while either standing or sitting. Take Control with Exercise – Tuesdays &Thursdays at 10 a.m. Strengthen core muscles and improve flexibility and balance while boosting stamina during this gentle exercise program that is presented via video. **Exercises can be practiced while either standing or sitting. There is no fee for this class.**

Mahjong Lessons with Sylvia Rubin – Fridays, 9:30 a.m. Learn how to play this fun and challenging game. Playing Mahjong helps keep the brain sharp and supercharged.

Walk with Ease with Occupational Therapy Doctoral students, Rutgers University – Fridays, 10 a.m. (June 7 – July 19). Walk with ease in this multi-component program that includes health education, stretching and strengthening exercises, and motivational tips. The Arthritis Foundation’s Walk with Ease Program is a community-based, physical activity and self-management education program. **There is no class on June 21. Pre-registration is required. June 3, 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. – Hearing Screenings with Tracy Walker, Hearing Life. Get a free 15-minute hearing screening, which is recommended for everyone over the age of 60 years. Even with good hearing, participants can use their screenings as a baseline if experiencing hearing loss in the future.

June 4, 11 a.m. – Prostate Health and Cancer Prevention with Ryan Moulton from Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey. Learn about the risks of prostate cancer, how it’s treated, and prevention tips. Approximately 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer, but most men survive the disease if it is detected and treated early.

June 5, 11 a.m. – Paint a Pot With Donna Smith, Arbor Terrace. Take this opportunity to beautify the home by painting a clay flowerpot and then planting herbs in the pot. **Pre-registration is required. All supplies will be provided.**

June 6, 11 a.m. – June Trivia. Play this fun game that will test your knowledge about all things June with categories, such as history, science, nature, zoology, and more.

Researchers have found that playing Bingo provides multiple health benefits, such as promoting socialization, strengthening hand-eye coordination, improving concentration, listening, and short-term memory skills.

June 13, 11 a.m. – Memory Enhancement Techniques with Devon Grier, OTR, Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, Somerset. Understand memory and the difference between short-term and long-term memory. Learn about the causes of memory loss, the relationship between acquisition and recall, strategies to enhance memory and learning capacity, as well as memorization techniques, and when to seek care.

June 14, 11 a.m. – Father’s Day Windchime Craft. Celebrate this special day by creating a windchime for beauty and relaxing tones in the home. **Pre-registration is required. Supplies will be provided.**

June 17 – “The ABCs of Subacute and Long-Term Care” with Emily Bassiacos, Allaire Health Services. Learn what type of care family members may need throughout different stages of life.

June 18, 11 a.m. – “Shipwrecked” with Meg Wastie. Learn the history of famous shipwrecks from the 17th to 20th centuries that occurred off the coast of New Jersey. **This program is made possible by funds from the Somerset County Cultural & Heritage Commission, a partner of the New Jersey Historical Commission.**

June 19, 11 a.m. – “Uncovering the Enslaved” with Gwen Allen, Liberty Hall Museum. Learn the history of slavery in New Jersey in honor of Juneteenth. June 26, 11 a.m. – “The Dangers of Sugar” with Public Health Nutritionist Andrea Huber, Bernards Health Department. Learn how much sugar is in soda and other popular drinks, the health risks associated with consuming too much sugar, plus tips to cut back on one’s intake.

June 27, 11 a.m. – Summer Craft. Create a mirror craft in the shape of a sun to beautify the home. **Pre-registration is required. Supplies will be provided.**

(Virtual) Hatha Yoga with Bharti – Tuesdays & Thursdays, 9:30 a.m. Improve body posture through breath control and meditation by practicing Hatha Yoga, which can provide health benefits, such as aligning the body and improving balance, flexibility, and circulation.

Card Games – Tuesdays, 10 a.m. Play favorite card games with fellow center members at the senior wellness center.

Share common feelings about grief and the renewal process in this support group that provides participants with a safe place for grieving the death of a loved one. June 5, 10:30 a.m. – Somerset County Office on Aging & Disability Services Public Hearing. The Somerset County Office on Aging & Disability Services and its Advisory Council will hold a public hearing regarding programs and services for adults 60 and above and their caregivers. The purpose of the hearing is to offer county residents the opportunity to comment on the needs of those age 60 years and above, caregivers, and persons living with a disability.

The 2025 - 2027 Area Plan Contract provides services funded under Title III of the Older American’s Act including Supplemental Aging Supportive Services, State Safe Housing and Transportation, Adult Protective Services, Casino Revenues, State, County and Local Funds. The plan identifies trends and conditions affecting the aging population in Somerset County. Goals and implementing strategies to meet current needs will be discussed. The services and programs to be provided under the Older American’s Act will be described, along with the proposed spending plan. The forum is an opportunity for the public to talk about community needs and recommend potential solutions.

Dispose of unused and expired medication safely with a Sheriff’s Officer at the senior wellness center. Nia Melt and Yoga with Alice – Mondays, 11 a.m. Eliminate stuck stress and pain in the body by releasing it from the joints where it is trapped, in this class tailored for seniors. You don’t need a partner and dancing is an easy way to stay healthy, both mentally and physically. The origin of singing bowls began in the 16th century when Buddhist Monks used the bowls while meditating, and this practice is now used throughout the world as a form of therapy with other holistic techniques.

June 18, 11 a.m. – Touch Drawing with Karen Tuveson. Take this cathartic class for healing and self-discovery through touch-drawing, which is spontaneous, and deeply intuitive. The touch-drawing method does not require a brush, pencil, model, or objects. Participants will place paper over a surface of ink or paint and apply gentle pressure with the fingertips and hands, while images emerge on the paper. 1-on-1 Computer with Sal – Mondays, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Learn how to email, play solitaire, and search the web in this eight-week, one-on-one class when participants will finally understand what their grandkids have been trying to explain. **Pre-registration is required. Gentle Yoga with Jillian – Tuesdays, 1 p.m. & Thursdays, 10 a.m. Practice Hatha yoga poses while either sitting or standing, to increase bone density, and improve strength, flexibility, and balance while immersed in a relaxing class. Expect a lot of gentle stretching to bring movement to joints and muscles. The class is perfect for relieving stress, and it also helps participants achieve an overall sense of well-being. **Pre-registration is required. The cost is $40 for the eight-week program. Project Healthy Bones – Wednesdays, 10 a.m. Improve balance, strength, flexibility, and posture in this peer-led, 24-week exercise and education program is for individuals who are either at risk for osteoporosis or have it. **Class is currently full. Tai Chi with Senior Wellness Center Volunteer Roger – Wednesdays, 10 a.m. Reduce pain, fatigue, and stiffness to gain a greater sense of well-being. In this class, participants will practice shifting body weight through a series of light, controlled movements that flow rhythmically into one long gesture. Practicing Tai Chi can help reduce the risk of falls, especially for those who have balance problems. **This program can be practiced while either standing or sitting.**

Advanced Bridge – First & Third Wednesdays, 1 – 3:30 p.m. Play Bridge to stimulate the brain and keep the memory active and alert. **This group is for advanced players only.**

Art Hour with Jean – Wednesdays, 1 – 3:30 p.m. Take this great opportunity to meet new people while creating a piece of artwork using watercolors or acrylics. **All supplies will be provided.**

Bridge – Fridays, 1 p.m. Play Bridge, a mentally challenging card game that stimulates the brain, keeps the memory active and the brain alert while providing intellectual and social stimulation.

Geri-Fit with Rutgers University Occupational Therapy Doctoral students, Rutgers University Occupational Therapy Fridays, 10 a.m. (Session runs June 7 to July 26). Rebuild strength that’s been lost through the aging process to gain a higher level of functioning. This class combines strength training with stretching and range of motion exercises, stability, and balance training for fall prevention, cardiovascular activity for heart health, and gait exercises to help improve walking. This unique and beneficial 45-minute exercise program is facilitated two times per week, for 12 weeks for a total of 24 classes. **This class can be practiced while sitting or standing. Participants should bring a set of light dumbbell weights (2 lbs. to start), a sturdy chair, a stretch band, and water to drink during the workout. Pre-registration is required. Walk with Ease with Occupational Therapy Doctoral students, Rutgers University – Fridays, 1 p.m. (This session occurs June 7 to July 19). Walk with ease in this multi-component program that includes health education, stretching, strengthening exercises, and motivational tips. The Arthritis Foundation’s Walk with Ease program is a community-based, physical activity and self-management education program. **There is no class on June 21. Pre-registration is required. June 3, 11 a.m. – Martial Your Strength: Senior Self-Defense with L. Greg Smith. Learn how to feel secure through initiatives, techniques, and tips. This program will build on the 2023 introduction series by taking it to the next level. In this class, participants will learn high-level/basic martial arts moves by watching and doing simple effective methodologies to keep focused and gain more street smarts.

June 3, 1 p.m. – Meet & Greet Warren Librarian Jennifer Konopacki. Learn all about the programs that are available at the library for everyone to enjoy.

June 5, 11 a.m. – “Jersey Fresh Fruits & Vegetables” with Mikaela Kane, Rutgers Cooperative Extension. Learn about seasonal produce and take home some great recipes.

June 10, 27, 11 a.m. – Bingo with Bob Mazet. Play a rousing game of Bingo, which is more than just an exciting activity. Researchers have found that playing Bingo promotes socialization, strengthens hand-eye coordination, and improves listening and short-term memory skills.

(Virtual) June 11, 1:30 p.m. – Monthly Book Club, Second Tuesday of the Month. Join fellow book club members to discuss the book of the month and select the next book to read. **This club is only for Warrenbrook Senior Center Participants. New members are always welcome!**

June 12, 11 a.m. – Nutrition for Colorectal Health with Cecilia Gomez, Cancer Institute of New Jersey. Learn tips about nutrition to help lower the risk of colorectal cancer.

June 13, 11 a.m. – Breathing Techniques for Mental Wellness by Dr. Prabha Srinivas. Learn useful techniques to distract the mind and induce calm during an episode of anxiety. These techniques will help participants identify situations that may trigger anxiety and by using the techniques learned in this class they will calm the nervous system.

June 14 & 28, 11 a.m. – Brain Games and Handbells with Adrienne Graubard. Solve puzzles and use handbells to stimulate the brain and enhance creative and critical thinking in this mind-tingling, brain-stumping, and fun-filled musical workout.

June 17, 11 a.m. – Carnival Games. Celebrate summer by participating in carnival games, such as Ring Toss, Button Toss, Spin the Wheel, Darts, and Roll the Ball and wake up the inner child. The event will be indoors. Winners will receive prizes.

June 19, 11 a.m. – “Africans in America” with Charles Smith, Rutgers Lifelong Learning Institute. Learn the history of the descent of Africans in America and their origins in Africa, the history of slavery in the U.S., and information about Martin Luther King Junior the leader of the civil rights movement.

June 20, 11 a.m. – “Lawn Care for the Homeowner” with Tom Reede, Rutgers Master Gardeners of Somerset County. Learn the basics of lawn maintenance including mowing, watering, fertilizing, thatch management, aeration, weed management, diseases, grubs, and more, for a healthy and attractive lawn! This class is for experts and anyone new to lawn care.
