Somerset County Senior Centers Offer Outdoor Programming and Zoom Activities in July
Virtual Classes and Programs Help Seniors Stay Connected and Fit During the COVID-19 Pandemic

SOMERVILLE, NJ – Due to the coronavirus pandemic, all county-operated senior centers managed by the Somerset County Office on Aging and Disability Services are temporarily closed until July 31, 2021. The county’s management team is following state-mandated public healthcare guidelines while they continue to assess the centers’ reopening dates. There will be no virtual classes/programs on Independence Day (July 5).

Although most senior center programs are offered via Zoom, as pandemic restrictions are easing, senior centers will provide a limited number of free outdoor services including live music events and some exercise programs. Events that are held outdoors will be noted on the calendar as OUTDOOR EVENTS. Participants must register ahead of time for outdoor programming and order their boxed lunch in advance.

Social Distancing
Masks are required for those who are not fully vaccinated and are preferred when social distancing cannot be maintained.

Zoom Guidelines
Unless otherwise specified, residents who are age 60 and above can join any of the Zoom programs listed in this schedule even if they are not a client at the center hosting the Zoom program. Zoom is a secure, video-based, user-friendly, online platform that can be accessed through a smartphone, tablet, or computer that allows residents to see and hear others.

Zoom Activity Release Forms
Participants are required to obtain and complete an Activity Release Form from the senior center they regularly attend. After submitting the form to that center, participants will receive an email with information about all Zoom classes and programs listed in this schedule. All programs are FREE for registered members!

July 1, 10:45 a.m. – Retro-Rockets! With Rearview Mirror. Celebrate the season of the sun with Rearview Mirror and enjoy their rendition of music from past decades including rock and roll, R&B, Motown, pop, country, and disco from past decades. Their performance will feature cover songs from Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder, the Temptations, and more. Enjoy the rich harmonies from this male/female duo and their full-band sound! July 1, 11 a.m. – “Travel and Trivia from Around the World” by Senior Support Specialist/Crisis Counselor Samantha Malinger, with RWJ Institute for Prevention and Recovery’s Hope and Healing Program. Take a trip around the world and learn useful and fun facts about exotic places. **This program is hosted by the Warrenbrook Senior Center.**

July 2, 11 a.m. – July Jeopardy. Test your knowledge about July when you play “July Jeopardy.” This is a fun version of the famous television game show “Jeopardy.” The questions will be all about July. **This program is hosted by the Senior Wellness Center at Hillsborough.**

July 2, 2:45 p.m. – Brain Games and Trivia with Kristen. Join Kristen for various trivia and brain games. Studies show that playing games may help sharpen certain thinking skills that tend to wane with age, such as processing speed, planning skills, reaction time, decision making and short-term memory. **This program is hosted by the Senior Wellness Center at Basking Ridge.**

July 6, 11 a.m. – “Why Do We Say That?” (Origins of Common Expressions) by lecturer Meg Wastie. Learn how some strange phrases and sayings originated in the English language. **This program is hosted by the Senior Wellness Center at Basking Ridge.**

July 6, 1 p.m. – “Tips and Tools for Medication Management” by Eldercare Educator Laurie Roome, Somerset County Office on Aging & Disability Services. Become empowered and learn how to actively manage your healthcare. Understand how age changes one’s response to medication, how to track medications, and how to reduce the risk of medication error and drug interactions. **This program is hosted by the Warrenbrook Senior Center.**

July 6, 3 p.m. – Guided Meditation with Cate. Take a break and soothe yourself with calming music and meditation that will help reduce stress, control anxiety, help increase one’s attention span, and decrease age-related memory loss. **This program is hosted by the Senior Wellness Center at Bridgewater.**

July 7, 11 a.m. – “Legends of Liberty Hall” by Hannah Gaston, Liberty Hall Museum. Learn about Liberty Hall that was built in Union, New Jersey 250 years ago. Discover how its history grew into stories, stories grew into the legends and how there’s a grain of truth to many of those legends. Participate in an interactive storytelling experience about the ghost of Hannah Caldwell, the love affair of Alexander Hamilton, the British army’s visits to Liberty Hall and more! **This program is made possible by funds from the Somerset County Cultural & Heritage Commission, a partner of the New Jersey Historical Commission. July 7, 11 a.m. – “The Summer Olympics 2021: Behind the Scenes” by Washington Bureau Chief, President and Founder of LJC Media, International Consulting Washington D.C., Los Angeles and London, TV/Radio and Podcast Host Jim Williams. Take a behind-the-scenes look at how NBC will broadcast the games, how each country at the games will simultaneously see what Americans are seeing, how far advance it takes to prepare venues for the games, and why it is the most challenging live event on television. After a year-long delay, the Tokyo Summer Olympics are officially beginning on July 23. **This program is hosted by the Quail Brook Senior Center.**

July 8, 11 a.m. – Animals are Coming! (Part 2) with Maestro George Marriner Maull, Discovery Orchestra. Allow your imagination to connect the sounds of animals and other creatures from the Saint-Saens Carnival of the Animals. Maestro Maull has designed a program that will teach participants the listening skills needed to connect to classical music. July 9, 11 a.m. – “American Revolution: 10 Crucial Days” by Barry Singer, Princeton Historical Society. Immerse yourself in the history of the Continental Army’s disheartening retreat across New Jersey that features the extraordinary events of the “10 Crucial Days,” beginning with Washington’s Crossing of Delaware, and the Battle of Princeton in 1777. Learn about the Continental Army’s bravery, sacrifice, and perseverance through unimaginable difficulties that led to an amazing three victories in 10 days, which changed the course of history resulting in the birth of our free nation. Engage with the joy of connecting movement and creative-visual arts. This is a creative and expressive arts workshop that will stimulate the brain, improve communication skills, help participants embrace self-awareness and appreciate individualism. **This program is hosted by the Quail Brook Senior Center.**

July 12, 1 p.m. – The Coffee House Project with John Fitzpatrick. Join John and be transported to another time while listening to a live Zoom broadcast of some of the greatest hits from the 18th to the 21st century, which has been taken from an eclectic, interesting, sometimes humorous, and always life-affirming playlist. John will provide commentary on his recordings. **This program is hosted by the Senior Wellness Center at Bridgewater.**

July 13, 11 a.m. – Travel Trivia: Paris by Senior Support Specialist/Crisis Counselor with RWJ Institute for Prevention and Recovery’s Hope and Healing Program. Take a virtual tour of Paris and test your knowledge about the “City of Lights.” **This program is hosted by the Senior Wellness Center at Basking Ridge.**

July 13, 3 p.m. – Virtual Bingo. Researchers have found that playing Bingo provides multiple benefits, such as promoting socialization, strengthening hand-eye coordination, and helping to improve short-term memory skills. Participants can play virtually by using the gameboard on their computer screen. **This program is hosted by the Senior Wellness Center at Bridgewater.**

July 14, 11 a.m. – “Back School: Safely Address Common Back Injuries” by David Switay, JAG-One Physical Therapy in Bridgewater. Learn about taking care of the back each day, how to prevent back injuries, and how to manage chronic back pain. David Switay will also discuss some reasons why people have back pain, how to prevent back pain, and tips about how to sleep and sit to avoid back injury. **This program is hosted by the Senior Wellness Center at Bridgewater.**

July 14, 11 a.m. – “COVID & Medicare” by Eldercare Educator Adalin Ball, M.S.W. Somerset County Office on Aging & Disability Services. Join this presentation to gain insight into Medicare benefits and what it covers during a public health emergency such as the COVID-19 pandemic. Learn about the differences between Medicare and Medicare Advantage, Part D Prescription Drug plans and what services these plans cover. **This program is hosted by the Quail Brook Senior Center.**

July 15, 11 a.m. – Cataracts by Bryan Abessi, M.D., F.A.A.O. (Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry). Join Dr. Abessi, for an important discussion about cataracts and eye health. **This program is hosted by the Warrenbrook Senior Center.**

July 16, 11 a.m. – “Understanding Alzheimer’s and Dementia,” Presented by Nicolette Vasco from the Alzheimer’s Association. Learn all about Alzheimer’s, a devastating disease that is developed by someone in the U.S. every 65 seconds. July 19, 11 a.m. – “Insect Invasion & Tree Disease” by NJ LTE #426-Outreach Coordinator Pam Zipse, Rutgers Urban Forestry Program of NJAES. Learn about the growing threat to millions of acres of forestland across the U.S. Both hard- and soft-wood trees have been killed at an alarming rate by invasive insects and disease. In this lecture, participants will find out about the preventative actions that are being taken to protect trees for future generations, and the types of insects that are common threats, such as the insect larvae of the tent caterpillar, gypsy moth, spruce budworm, eastern tent caterpillar, wood-boring insects.**This program is hosted by the Quail Brook Senior Center.**

July 19, 12 p.m. – Painting with Debbie Perez. Learn how to make a work-of-art at home with the guidance of a local artist via Zoom! July 20, 1 p.m. – Learn to Draw a Lighthouse with Nadeen. Learn how to draw a lighthouse using a practical drawing method and minimal supplies (only pencil and paper). **This program is hosted by the Warrenbrook Senior Center.**

July 21, 11 a.m. – “Social Changes and Interactions: A New Realm” by Training & Consultation Specialist Monica Townsend, M.P.A., B.S., Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care, COPSA Institute for Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders. In this presentation, Monica will discuss the emotional impact that COVID has had on society and address the concerns that people might have now that restrictions are being lifted, and people are beginning to interact more after fear and isolation have been part of so many lives over an extended period.**This program is hosted by the Quail Brook Senior Center.**

July 22, 11 a.m. – Paper Marbling: Hand-Made Cards with artist Sam Matthews, Arts Across Borders. Get creative with artist Sam Matthews. Celebrate summer with the vocal group Singing for Smiles who will perform favorites from Alexander’s Ragtime Band, such as “Beyond the Sea,” “Blue Skies,” “Chattanooga Choo Choo,” and more! Singing for Smiles is a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to spreading happiness through singing! **This program is hosted by the Quail Brook Senior Center.**

July 26, 12 p.m. – Fact or Fiction. Test the memory, stretch the imagination and maybe learn something shocking. In this game, participants will try to guess if wild statements are true or false – the answers may be surprising. Sherlock Holmes once said, “Life is infinitely stranger than anything which the mind of man could invent.” **This program is hosted by the Senior Wellness Center at Bridgewater.**

July 28, 11 a.m. – “George Washington and Morristown, NJ…Perfect Together” by Joel Farkas, Revolutionary War historian. Join Joel Farkas on a tour through George Washington’s Morristown and learn how important this local city was to the Revolution, and American history! The group will start at the Morristown Green, to learn about Washington’s first winter encampment, smallpox inoculations, and then on to Arnold’s Tavern, Dickerson’s Tavern, and the Presbyterian Church cemetery. Next, visit the Schuyler-Hamilton House and the Ford Mansion, and learn about the connections to Alexander Hamilton and George Washington. Mondays, 10 a.m. – Chair Yoga with Manjula. Gain the benefits of practicing yoga poses from the support and safety of your favorite chair. This class is an excellent opportunity to increase bone density, improve strength, flexibility and balance while being immersed in a relaxing class. Expect lots of gentle stretching to bring movement to joints and muscles. This class is perfect for relieving stress and helping to gain an overall sense of well-being. The class is open to all skill levels and can be practiced while standing or sitting. **A maximum of 25 participants is allowed in the class. Mondays, 12 p.m. – Silver Strength with Rose. Join this 45-minute exercise class, where participants will practice 20 minutes of cardio (or movement), followed by 20 minutes of toning (with or without weights), then a five-minute relaxing stretch. **This class is great for all skill levels. Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays, 1 p.m. – The Regime Exercise Class with Allyson. Get a head-to-toe workout by using weights at intervals, and practicing stretching and aerobic movements to lubricate joints for flexibility, strengthen and stabilize muscles, increase blood circulation and help with weight loss. These exercises can also help lower the risk of falls and increase one’s ability to accomplish daily activities. Exercises can be practiced while either standing or sitting and with or without hand weights. Fridays, 11:30 a.m. – Zumba Gold (Chair) with Laurie Fetcher. Get your blood pumping to zesty music that will inspire a hearty workout. This class is manageable for people age 60 and above, beginners, or others who need modification to their exercise routine. Participants will build cardiovascular health by challenging the heart and working hip, leg, and arm muscles as they practice fun and rhythmic moves while sitting in a chair.**A maximum of 25 participants is allowed in the class. By using fine magic markers and card stock paper, participants will create a colorful drawing of a seashell completed by making dots.
