With the Restoration of In-Person Elections, Additional Poll Workers Are Needed

BRIDGEWATER, NJ – Somerset County’s Board of Elections announced today that it is hiring up to 200 additional poll workers to support the June 8 primary elections. Following the COVID pandemic 2020 election that featured almost exclusively mail-in balloting, the 2021 elections will be mostly held in person at polling places throughout the county. As a result, the Board of Elections is looking to bolster its primary day staff to assist voters.

“We have an obligation to make voting as easy as possible for those who wish to participate in our elections, and once again that includes being fully staffed at in-person polling locations,” said Somerset County Board of Elections Administrator Jerry Midgette. “While we have maintained mail-in ballots and increased the number of ballot drop boxes throughout the county, we expect that with COVID waning many voters will want to cast their ballot on a machine as they have in the past and we want to be ready to support them.”

Poll workers are paid $200 for one day’s work, starting at 5:15 a.m. and ending at 8:30 p.m. Workers are assigned as close to their residence as possible, but final work locations are determined by available vacancies. Applicants must be a registered voter in Somerset County, or high school students who are between 16 and 17 years old American citizens living in Somerset County with the permission of their parents and a high school representative.

Interested parties should download an application at https://www.co.somerset.nj.us/pw2021 and submit as soon as possible. Because of COVID protections, there will be only (2) in-person training classes now scheduled for May 27, 2021 at 10am and 6pm in Somerville, NJ. However, poll worker training can also be conducted online and can be done at the convenience of the applicant.
