There is a Mayor and 6 member a Borough Council. The Mayor is elected to a 4 year term and the Council members are all are elected to three year terms. A full-time Borough Administrator oversees the day-to-day functions of the Borough.
Peapack is believed to have been derived from "Peapackton", a Lenape Native American term meaning "marriage of the waters", a reference to the confluence of the Peapack Brook and Raritan River in the area. Gladstone was named in honor of William Ewart Gladstone, who served as British Prime Minister several times between 1868 and 1894.
The Borough was settled in 1701 and incorporated in 1912.
Peapack-Gladstone is located in the 7th Congressional District and is part of New Jersey's 23rd state legislative district. Peapack and Gladstone is part of Somerset County.
NJ transit maintains two train stations in the Borough with direct service to New York and Hoboken. There is ample FREE parking located at each station.
Weekly trash collection is provided to all residents as part of the Borough’s basic municipal services. In addition there are quarterly curbside large item trash pickups, bi-weekly curbside recycling pickups, and holiday tree pickups. All services are provided free of charge.

Policing is provided by the Peapack and Gladstone Police Department which has a staff of a Chief and nine (9) officers.
Fire service has been provided since 1905 by the all-volunteer Peapack and Gladstone Volunteer Fire Company. The department operates out of the fire station located on Dewey Avenue.
Emergency medical services are provided by the non-profit, all-volunteer Peapack Gladstone First Aid Squad located on St. Lukes Avenue. The Squad provides around-the-clock service at no cost.
Emergency medical services are bolstered by Mobile Intensive Care Units (MICU) with paramedics from the local hospitals of Morristown Medical Center (also a regional trauma center) in Morristown and from Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital - Somerset in Somerville. In the event of a serious trauma accident, as occurs occasionally on Route 206 which runs through the borough, the services of the New Jersey State Police North Shock Trauma Air Rescue (NorthSTAR), which is based in neighboring Bedminster Township, may be called upon to provide medical evacuation to a trauma center.
Students in public school for pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade attend the schools of the award winning Somerset Hills Regional School District, a regional school district serving students from Bernardsville, Far Hills and Peapack-Gladstone, along with those from Bedminster Township who attend the district's high school as part of a sending/receiving relationship. The three schools in the district are Bedwell Elementary School (PreK–4), Bernardsville Middle School (5–8) and Bernards High School (9–12), all of which are located in Bernardsville. Free school busing is provided to all children.
There are also two (2) private schools located within the Borough. Gill St. Bernard's School is a private, non sectarian, coeducation day school, serving students in pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade and The Willow School is an independent co-educational day school for age 3 to grade 8.
